Wine coolers are the appliance where a small fault costs the most, because the damage lands on the contents rather than the machine. A unit drifting five degrees warm across a summer will flatten a collection long before the owner notices the cooler is struggling.
There are two very different machines sold under the same name. Thermoelectric coolers are quiet, have no compressor, and struggle in warm rooms. Compressor units behave like small refrigerators and fail like them - fans, relays, thermostats and seals.
Built-in units add a specific failure of their own: they need front ventilation, and when the grille is blocked or the unit was installed in cabinetry meant for a freestanding model, it overheats and never reaches setpoint.

What actually fails
Thermoelectric module. In fanless coolers, the Peltier module weakens with age and simply stops pulling temperature down. Replacement restores the unit, but we will check room temperature first - many of these units cannot cope with a warm kitchen.
Evaporator or condenser fan. In compressor units, a failed fan is the most common cause of a cooler that runs but does not cool. It is an inexpensive part.
Thermostat or control board. Dual-zone units frequently lose one zone to a failed sensor or control, which reads to the owner as a half-broken appliance.
Door seal and glass. A soft or distorted gasket lets warm humid air in, producing condensation and constant compressor running. Gasket replacement is straightforward.
Blocked ventilation. Built-in units vent through the front grille. Installed in a cabinet meant for a freestanding cooler, they overheat and never hold temperature - a fault no part will fix.

My wine cooler is a few degrees warm. Does that matter?
Yes, over time. Sustained warmth ages wine faster and the damage is not reversible, so a drifting cooler is worth addressing early rather than at the end of a season.
One zone is cold and the other is not. What is wrong?
Dual-zone units have separate sensors and often separate fans or dampers. A single failed sensor or fan takes out one zone and leaves the other working normally.
Why is there condensation inside?
Warm humid air is getting in, almost always past a door gasket that has gone soft or a door that no longer sits square.
Can a built-in wine cooler go under a counter in any cabinet?
Only if it is a built-in model with front ventilation. A freestanding unit installed in enclosed cabinetry will overheat and never reach setpoint.
