A refrigerator that stops cooling is the most urgent call we get, and it is also the one most often misdiagnosed. Homeowners assume a dead compressor and start shopping for a new unit, when the real fault is a $40 evaporator fan or a frost-blocked defrost heater.

Our technicians work the diagnosis in order: airflow first, then the defrost circuit, then the sealed system. That sequence matters, because roughly seven out of ten "not cooling" calls in Chicago turn out to be airflow or defrost — repairs that cost a fraction of a compressor job and take under two hours.

We service freestanding, French-door, side-by-side, counter-depth and fully built-in refrigerators, including Sub-Zero, Viking and Thermador units that most general repair companies will not touch.

Symptoms

Refrigerator Repair faults we fix every week

If your appliance is doing any of the following, it is a repair we handle routinely and usually finish in one visit.

  • Fridge is warm but the freezer still works
  • Both compartments are warm and the unit is silent
  • Water pooling under the crisper drawers
  • Ice maker produces nothing, or hollow cubes
  • Compressor runs constantly and never cycles off
  • Loud buzzing, clicking or rattling from the back
  • Frost building up on the back wall of the freezer
  • Water dispenser dead or dripping
  • Door seal not closing, condensation on the outside

What actually fails in a refrigerator

Evaporator fan motor. If the freezer is cold but the fridge is warm, cold air is not being moved between compartments. The fan motor is the usual culprit and it is an inexpensive, fast replacement.

Defrost system. A failed defrost heater, thermostat or timer lets frost armour the evaporator coil until air cannot pass through it. You will often see a wall of ice at the back of the freezer. Replacing the failed component and clearing the coil restores full cooling.

Condenser coils and fan. In Chicago apartments with pets, condenser coils clog with dust and hair within a year. The compressor then runs continuously, burns electricity, and eventually overheats. Cleaning plus a condenser fan replacement is a same-visit fix.

Start relay and capacitor. A compressor that hums and clicks every few minutes but never starts is usually a failed start relay, not a failed compressor. This is the single most common reason a repairable fridge gets thrown away.

Sealed system leaks. Genuine refrigerant leaks do happen, and they require EPA-certified handling. We are licensed for sealed system work — but we will tell you honestly when the repair cost approaches replacement value.

Should you repair or replace?

Refrigerators typically last 10–13 years. If your unit is under eight years old, repair is almost always the economical choice. Past twelve years, we will give you a straight recommendation rather than sell you a repair that buys six months. Built-in and luxury units are a different calculation entirely — a Sub-Zero is worth repairing well past twenty years.

Questions

Refrigerator Repair FAQ

My freezer is cold but the fridge is warm — what does that mean?

Cold air is generated in the freezer and moved to the fridge compartment by the evaporator fan. If the freezer works and the fridge does not, the fault is almost always the evaporator fan motor, a frost-blocked evaporator coil, or a stuck damper — not the compressor. These are inexpensive repairs, usually finished in one visit.

How long does refrigerator repair take?

Most repairs are completed in 60 to 120 minutes on the first visit. If a specific part is not on the van, we order it the same day and typically return within 24 to 48 hours.

Is it worth repairing a refrigerator that is ten years old?

Often yes, if the repair costs less than half of a comparable replacement. A ten-year-old unit with a failed fan or defrost heater has years of life left. A ten-year-old unit with a failed sealed system usually does not. Our technician will give you the honest number both ways.

Do you repair Sub-Zero and other built-in refrigerators?

Yes. Built-in and luxury units — Sub-Zero, Viking, Thermador, Miele — are a core part of our work. These units are designed for long service lives and are almost always worth repairing rather than replacing.

My ice maker stopped working but the fridge is cold. Can you fix just that?

Yes. Ice maker faults are usually a failed water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube, or a dead ice maker module. All three are straightforward standalone repairs and do not require touching the cooling system.
