Standing water
in the bottom?
Dishes coming out dirty, water sitting in the tub, a leak reaching the cabinets, or a cycle that never ends. Built-in, drawer and portable dishwashers from every major brand.
Dishwashers fail quietly. The dishes come out a little less clean each month, or a small leak works its way under the cabinet where nobody sees it until the floor is damaged. Both are worth acting on early.
Most dishwasher faults trace back to three things: a blocked drain path, worn spray arm bearings or clogged jets, and a failed door seal. None are expensive to fix and all are considerably cheaper than replacing a built-in unit and its cabinetry fit.
Symptoms
Dishwasher Repair faults we fix every week
If your appliance is doing any of the following, it is a repair we handle routinely and usually finish in one visit.
- Standing water left in the bottom after a cycle
- Dishes still dirty or gritty at the end
- Water leaking from the door or under the unit
- Cycle runs endlessly and never finishes
- Dishwasher will not start or fill
- Detergent dispenser not opening
- Loud grinding or humming during the cycle
- Dishes not drying at all
- Error code flashing on the panel
Common dishwasher failures
Drain blockage. Food debris, broken glass and grease collect in the filter, the drain hose or the air gap. Water then sits in the tub after every cycle. Clearing the full drain path — not just the visible filter — resolves it.
Drain pump. If the path is clear and water still will not leave, the drain pump has failed or its impeller is jammed. Stocked part, same-visit repair.
Spray arms and wash pump. Dirty dishes with clean water reaching them means the spray arms are not spinning or the jets are blocked with mineral scale. Chicago water is hard, and scale is a routine cause here.
Door seal and latch. Leaks around the door are usually a hardened gasket. A door that will not latch stops the cycle from starting at all.
Heating element. No heat means no proper wash and no dry cycle. A failed element is a standard replacement.
Inlet valve. A dishwasher that will not fill, or one that keeps filling and floods, points at the water inlet valve.
Built-in units and water damage
A built-in dishwasher that leaks slowly can ruin a kitchen floor and the cabinet run beside it long before you notice. If you see any warping at the base of the adjacent cabinet, treat it as urgent. We pull the unit, find the leak source, and check the surrounding area rather than just replacing the obvious part.

Questions
Dishwasher Repair FAQ
Why is there always water in the bottom of my dishwasher?
The drain path is blocked or the drain pump has failed. Debris collects in the filter, the drain hose, or the air gap at the sink. A small amount of water in the sump is normal by design; several centimetres standing after a cycle is not.
My dishes come out dirty even though the cycle runs. Why?
Water is reaching the tub but not being sprayed properly. The spray arms are blocked with mineral scale or food debris, the arm bearings are worn, or the wash pump is weak. Chicago's hard water makes scale build-up a frequent cause.
Is a leaking dishwasher urgent?
Yes, especially in a built-in installation. A slow leak travels under the cabinet run and damages flooring and cabinetry before it becomes visible. If the base of the neighbouring cabinet is swelling or discoloured, book it right away.
How long should a dishwasher last?
Nine to twelve years with normal use. Within that window, repair is nearly always more economical than replacement — particularly for built-in units, where replacement also means matching the cabinet opening and panel.
Do you repair dishwasher drawers and panel-ready units?
Yes. Drawer dishwashers and panel-ready integrated units are part of our regular work, including Bosch, Miele, Fisher & Paykel and KitchenAid models.
